Memorials to Lutheran Good Shepherd Home, Concordia MO, Trinity Lutheran Church Alma MO, or charity of your choice.Alma R. Kiehl, 90, of Alma MO, passed away on November 16, 2021 at the Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia.
Alma was born on February 5, 1931, in Alma, MO, to Albert and Ida (Kalthoff) Kiehl. She was baptized on Feb 15, 1931 by Rev A.H Griesse, and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School, and Alma High School. She continued her education at Valparaiso University and graduated from Kansas City University.
She moved to New York City, where she worked as an assistant editor for Sunset magazine, and also as a Social Worker. She was a woman of many interests and talents. In her youth she took violin and piano lessons. Her love of music continued into her adult life, including love of ballet, plays and art. She was an avid reader throughout her life. During one season of her life she travelled to Europe and also different places in the US. She encouraged her siblings to attend college, showing her understanding for the need of education. Her compassion for others included caring for her elderly aunt for a season and assisting a relative in New York. She was well loved by her friends in Greenwich Village and, while living there, published a small booklet of poetry Contrasts. Perhaps the best way to describe Alma was that she too was a woman of “contrasts”: resilient and unique, a people person and survivor of many life challenges. She was loved by many.
Alma is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ida Kiehl; sister, Gertrude Kramer; and brother, Marvin Kiehl.
She is survived by sister, Norma Ramey of Hickory NC; and brother, Harold Kiehl of St. Louis MO.
Graveside services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Alma, Missouri on Friday, November 26, at 10:00 am.
